Panasonic Power Distribution Unit Solutions

Panasonic Power Distribution Unit (PDU) Solutions utilize relays for remote maintenance switching. It is critical to have remote functionality in large data centers rather than have personnel switch the power distribution units manually. Inside a PDU, a relay is used to individually turn ON and OFF outlets for server equipment remotely. This is required for three main remote maintenance functions. In some cases, unused “ghost” servers may contain outdated applications that are no longer in use. Another reason would be when power may need to be cycled to fix frozen servers due to malfunction. Finally, servers that get too hot may also need to be turned off.

Panasonic’s DW Relays are small and ideal for Power Distribution Units. PDUs can contain dozens of densely mounted relays per board. The small size of the DW Relays allows for efficient use of board space and accommodates airflow between the relays to keep the board cool. The market trend for PDUs, particularly those installed in micro-data centers, will need to be very small and require relays with a small footprint. Next, the DW Relays feature a latching mechanism that saves power as it only requires a short pulse to the coil to remain in the SET position rather than continuous coil power consumption. In addition to energy-saving, this feature lowers the internal heat rise from the relay, reducing the overall board temperature. Also, the DW Relays contain a TV-8 inrush rating which means the relay can handle the large inrush generated by the uninterruptible power supplies or UPS that are common for this application. Finally, the DW Relays offer very consistent ON/OFF switch timing allowing the PDU design to take advantage of zero-cross switching circuitry to minimize the inrush across the contacts.
