Get in Touch with Microchip's 3D Gesture-Recognition TouchPad Now at Mouser
January 14, 2015 - Mouser Electronics, Inc., a leading global authorized distributor for semiconductors and electronic components, is now stocking the 3D TouchPad from Microchip Technology. Expanding upon their Human Interface Input Sensing Solutions portfolio, Microchip's 3D TouchPad is the first demonstration and development platform that combines 2D multi-touch and 3D air gesture input focused on the PC/peripheral and touch technology markets. The 3D TouchPad's robust 3D capability is based on Microchip's award-winning GestIC® technology, which detects 3D gestures from as far away as 10cm. The 3D TouchPad also benefits from Microchip's highly responsive projected-capacitive 2D multi-touch circuitry, which supports up to ten touch points and multi-finger surface gestures.
The Microchip 3D TouchPad, available from Mouser Electronics, allows developers to evaluate the Microchip MGC3130 3D Tracking and Gesture Controller, one of the industry's first electrical field based three-dimensional tracking and gesture controllers. This device incorporates Microchip's patented GestIC technology which recognizes natural hand and finger movements in free-space. The MGC3130 controller calculates the three-coordinate positions of a hand based disturbances caused by the hand's electric field. The controller enables 3D gesture recognition with power consumption as low as 150 microwatts in its active sensing state, and provides the flexibility to utilize pre-filtered electrode signals for additional functionality in their applications.
Combined with external electrodes and the host MCU, the MGC3130 blends both hardware and software to offer a complete 3D gesture recognition solution with minimal additional external components. The mixed-signal MGC3130 integrates a signal processing unit, 32 KB flash memory, 12 KB of RAM, one Tx channel, five Rx channels and I2C and SPI interfaces for streaming sensor x/y/z data or post-analysis gesture information to a host MCU.
The combination of the 3D Touchpad and controller offers designers unlimited development possibilities that are well-suited to a variety of applications - ranging from computer touch pads, remotes and game controllers, to automotive, home automation and wearable devices.
